UCPH Centre for Veterinary Simulation – Advancing Veterinary Training Without Live Animals
We develop and research veterinary simulation as an ethical and pedagogical alternative to live animals in veterinary education.
Our goal is to build a world-class centre that strengthens learning, animal welfare, and patient safety.

The centre is a research-based learning environment where students train clinical skills. Our research explores how simulation impacts learning outcomes, ethics, and emotions in veterinary education – paving the way for sustainable, evidence-based teaching that benefits both students and animals.
The UCPH Centre for Veterinary Simulation aims to:
- Replace, reduce, and refine the use of live animals in education (3R principles)
- Develop and validate new simulators and digital tools (VR, AR, etc.)
- Integrate simulation throughout the veterinary curriculum
- Train educators in evidence-based simulation pedagogy
- Establish a collaborative hub for veterinary simulation research and training
Defining day one competencies for new veterinarians- Integrating simulation training throughout the veterinary curiculum
- Design and testing new physical and digital simulator
- Teacher training in simulation and feedback methods
- Educational research on learning, technology, and ethics
- National and international collaborations (e.g., InVeST – International Veterinary Simulation in Teaching)
- Publications, conferences, and workshops on simulation-based learning
The centre is anchored at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (IKV), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
Collaborating partners include:
- Sarah Ballie, University of Bristol
- Leizl Joy Nayahangan, Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation (CAMES)
